One of the truly fun things that too often comes up in a deposition is a witness who plays dumb, sometimes very dumb, to avoid answering a question. The following video is a good example; a witness perplexed (he claims) by the term photocopier:

Justice Scalia Taken to Task (Again) by Judge Posner
Judge Richard A. Posner of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals is one of the true titans of American law, not just for the present for all times. He has been highly, highly critical of "originalist" constitutional theory of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in the past. Justice Scalia has appeared to suspend the notion of constitutional judicial review, at least when its exercise benefits an individual, group or cause that he dislikes, loathes or opposes, to wit: The Incoherence of Antonia Scalia and for a special bonus, "Very nice for fat cats and enemies of abortion"; Judge Posner on the Roberts Court's First Amendment rulings.
Judge Posner and law professor Eric J. Segall further their criticisms in a scathing essay in the New York Times: Justice Scalia's Majoritarian Theocracy.

Federal Sentencing Guidelines: "Sometimes the Guidelines Are Conceptually Hard to Follow"
"Sometimes the guidelines are conceptually hard to follow" is the understatement offered by U.S. District Judge Amul Thapar in a very unusual opinion granting a pro se defendant's request for an explanation as to why she was not eligible for a sentence reduction based on Amendment 782 to the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines that became effective November 1, 2014. No relief was granted or allowed, but Judge Thapar did offer a fair and earnest explanation, one whose effort deserves some plaudits. The case is United States v. Deborah Helton.
