The second week of the Sixth Circuit's first session of oral arguments in 2014 is the week of January 27-31. 98 cases are on the docket again including appeals from various district courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the Federal Mine Safety & Health Administration. The docket can be reviewed here.
This second week of oral arguments includes 98 cases and one (1) appeal from a civil jury trial, an appeal by a plaintiff who lost a civil rights excessive force case, Paolo Bronzino v. Dunn, 13-1276 from the Eastern District of Michigan at Detroit tried before District Judge George Steeh. So out of the 172 appeals on the court's docket for this session there is only this one civil jury trial appeal. There are 10 appeals from criminal jury trials bringing the total for the session to 24 appeals from a criminal jury trial, 1 from a civil jury trial.
The two perhaps notable cases from the Eastern District of Kentucky for this second week are Crestwood Farm Bloodstock v. Everest Stables, Inc, et al, No 13-5688 (appeals from breach of contract and thoroughbred syndication deal apparently gone bad) and Paul Ansfield v. Omnicare, Inc, No 13-5597 (plaintiffs appeal dismissal of their securities fraud case for failure to state a claim).
